3.9 Become an awesome apostrophe aficionado

A second of the three uses of apostrophes is to show ownership.

For example, instead of writing …

The owner of the dog allowed their dog off the leash to play fetch at the beach.

You could write …

The dog’s owner allowed their dog off the leash to play fetch at the beach.

For plural words, the apostrophe is placed after the letter ‘s’ instead of before it. So instead of writing …

The owner of the dogs allowed their dogs off the leash to play fetch at the beach.

you could write …

The dogs’ owner allowed their dogs off the leash to play fetch at the beach.

If there were more than one owner, you could write …

The dogs’ owners allowed their dogs off the leash to play fetch at the beach.
