3.9 Become an awesome apostrophe aficionado

Apostrophes are used in three situations.

  1. To contract two words together into a single word (rarely used in research papers).
  2. To show ownership (commonly used in research papers).
  3. To show plurals of letters, numbers or symbols, including abbreviations (optional, because not all style guides agree on this: there are research papers published with and without this use of apostrophes).

Let’s now have a look at each of these three situations in turn.
