1.1 Get your authorship position on your paper settled from the outset

In different fields, different authorship positions can mean different things.

In my (Amanda’s) field of research (biomedical), the authors appearing first and last in the author list garner the most prestige from the paper when it’s published. The corresponding author is also a prestigious position on the paper.

  • The first author is recognized as the person who did the most work on the paper. This is often a research student or postdoctoral research fellow who collected the research data, analyzed it, wrote the first complete draft of the paper, integrated all Co-Author feedback, and led revision of the paper after peer review.

  • The last author is recognized as the person who oversaw the work on the paper – often in a supervisory role of the first author. This is often a senior researcher.

  • The corresponding author is the person to whom correspondence about the paper – published or as yet unpublished – should be addressed. This is the person who takes overall responsibility for the paper and the research underpinning it. It’s also the person that would most likely be invited by genuine conference organizers to speak on the topic of the paper at a conference.
