Step 2 Define, draft and refine your paper’s take-home message

In this step we’re going to walk you through a process that will lead you to the most important take-away that readers should get from your paper (its take-home message).

Most new writers don’t know what their paper’s take-home message is when they start writing their paper. Instead, they write draft after draft after draft of their paper, until eventually they stumble across the paper’s take-home message.

If they’d known their paper’s take-home message before they started writing, they could have saved themselves a lot of time.

That’s exactly what we’re going to do in this step: define, draft and then refine the take-home message before getting stuck into writing in later steps.
